The Present is a Gift

Mindfulness is the aware, balanced acceptance of the present experience. It isn’t more complicated that that. It is opening to or recieving the present moment, pleasant or unpleasant, just as it is, without either clinging to it or rejecting it. – Sylvia Boorstein

Being mindful can be difficult in today’s world with cell phones, radio, tv, computers, etc. Sadly, people can’t even drive without “doing” something. One of my favorite sayings is that “We are human beings, not human doings.” When was the last time you drove anywhere in complete quiet? When was the last time you sat with yourself, your thoughts, your emotions without trying to create mental lists, without editing, without worrying? Being is about non-attachment, it’s about allowing and letting the flow of life wash over you. We all struggle to “just be” some much more than others. Challenge yourself to find moments to “be” and just see what happens. Try this tomorrow. As you drive to work – or anywhere tomorrow, turn off the radio, put the windows down on this beautiful Fall day, prevent yourself from judging others – just experience them. Appreciate. See what happens as you arrive at your destination.
