Back To School Time

Another year is beginning for your little ones, and big ones. What will this year hold? Most parents expect that things are going to go relatively smoothly and still others dread what the new school year will bring in the way of challenges for their youngster. Many children have problems with learning. Did you know that ADHD is one of the most over-diagnosed disorders in children? Much of the time ADHD is “diagnosed” simply based on parent – “say-so” when speaking to a physician. Still other times the child will be given a “trial” of medication by a physician to see if the child has ADHD. These methods are inappropriate. The diagnosis of ADHD is an involved process that needs to be thoroughly examined by a psychologist to make a proper determination. This means that all other criteria needs to be ruled out. ADHD must be present in a variety of environments. This means that a child cannot “turn off” ADHD – if the child cannot pay attention or is hyper at home, then they would be the same at school, or the babysitters, or during field trips. Many times children can look to have ADHD symptoms, however, the true culprit is (gulp) poor parenting. At Rejuvenate Mind-Body Wellness Center we pride ourselves on accurately diagnosing ADHD. We do this through a clinical interview to discuss symptoms, examine behavior, and interaction between child and parent. We follow this up with testing – having parents, teachers, and any other prominent caregiver to fill out the ADHDT. We use the Conners Continuous Performance Test. Finally we verbally interview teachers to help gather information about behavior in the classroom. We take pride in our diagnosing procedures because we do not want to add to the over-diagnosis problem and have your children taking medications they do not need. If you have any questions about your child’s attention, concentration, hyperactivity, or impulsivity, bring them to Rejuvenate and let us help clear things up for you.
